Limited use of the 2nd runway of Kansai International Airport started on August 2, 2007. We will steadily promote the 2nd-phase airport island creation project toward completion of the 2nd-phase airport island after the start of the limited use. The 2nd-phase airport island creation project was started in 1999. Although the water was deeper than the 1st-phase airport island and the expected settlement was greater, the project was promoted smoothly, overcoming various technical problems, and the limited use of the 2nd runway was started on August 2, 2007.

[Reexamination of land creation project cost]
The project cost for the 2nd-phase land creation was estimated at 1,140 billion yen at first, but the reduction in the cost by procurement of inexpensive materials and introduction of an efficient construction process reduced the actual cost to 1,000 billion yen, of which 100 billion yen would be used in steps after the start of concomitant use in 2007.
Furthermore, 60 billion yen out of the total project cost planned up to the end of 2007 was carried forward. We will continue the project, aiming at the completion of land creation for the 2nd-phase airport island.

[Share of each passenger/cargo airport] The demand for air transportation in the world has begun to recover from the doldrums that continued since 9-11 in 2001 and SARS in 2003, being on a high-growth path particularly in Asia. Under such circumstances, Kansai International Airport handled 16.6 million passengers and 820,000 tons of cargos in 2006, playing an important role in our international air transport business.

Reinforcement of Kansai International Airport will contribute to the economic development and cultural exchange not only in Kansai but also in Japan as a whole. Equipped with two runways and meeting the global standard for 24-hour operation, Kansai International Airport is further expected to be the world first offshore airport that is friendly to the environment without noise pollution.

We will promote land creation toward materialization of the new 2nd-phase airport plan announced by Kansai International Airport in June 2007.
