Substantial reduction of \140,000,000,000 (slightly more than 12%) in cost

KALD's approach to cost reduction

Principle approach - cheaper, faster, better -
Secure and supply cheaper material (about 60 % of construction costs are material costs)
Landfill earth and sand
Obtaining reclamation soil of 250 million m3 in total(*1) in advance
Request for supply cooperation to Osaka Pref., Hyohgo Pref. and Wakayama Pref.

*1)500 times the volume of Kasumigaseki bldg.
Securing a large-scale earth and sand collection site near Kansai International Airport
Reduction in transportation cost
Reception of earth and sand generated by the work in the 1st-phase island and other public works
Use of recycled material
Reception of earth and sand generated by public works
・ making an acceptance system
using surplus soil from the First Phase airport island construction work
Sea Sand(Soil improvement material)
Importing sea sand from China, etc.
cutting down the price of domestic sand
improving the efficiency of sand sprinkling work
Secure & supply cheaper alternative materials
mixing a large volume of cheap quarry sand into sea sand

Direct delivery of large volumes of sand to the sea area site by a Panamax ship (first time in history).
Design ideas
Economical seawall design
Use of inexpensive pit sand
In the seawall structure design, attention has been paid to stability, reduction in costly stone, and use of inexpensive pit sand.
Promotion of recycling
The pollution prevention covering is used as an erosion control sheet.
Since the seawall has been completed, part of pollution prevention covering that is unnecessary now is used as an erosion control sheet at the back of the seawall.
The anchor blocks used to secure the pollution prevention covering are used as the superstructure of the seawall.
Effective Work Execution
Prior appointment of large work ships and their efficient use
Night Work

Night Work
The driving work of 1.2 million (*2) sand drain piles (for foundation improvement) was completed in 1year and 3 months. Had the work been carried out only during daytime, it would have taken twice as long to complete.
Securing large work ships
A number of marine airport construction works are running concurrently;
・Sand-spreading barge ( 9 large barges)
・ Sand drain barges (8 barges with 12 pile driving units)
・75 hopper barges with 3,000 m3 capacity
and other work ships with an efficient execution capacity were secured prior to work commencement.

*2)If the piles were connected end to end, they would go around _ of the earth.
*3)500 volume of 10-ton dump truck.

Night work of sand drain barges
Full use of the latest technology and information technology
Full use of GPS
Faster instructions to guide to the earth and sand dumping site with the help of operation control system that uses GPS

▲8. Special GPS system was loaded on every sand-carrying barge
8 (eight) highly capable sounding measurement ships were secured
In the Second Phase Construction Project, detailed management of sand casting and settlement was carried out. Digital data obtained facially by measuring cast amount, location, sedimentary configuration, etc. of each hopper barge was accumulated.
Introduction of light-wave-type soil volume inspection system
Improvement of operation cycle of barges
