Gently sloping rubble mound seawall
appearing above the sea for the first time

Construction work on the underwater seawalls has been proceeding smoothly since July 1999.Some rubble forming a portion of the planned gently sloping rubble mound seawalls, 12 m in width and 130 m in length, appeared above the sea surface for the first time on April 5, 2001 (Thu).
Parts of the sea area where the second-phase construction work is being carried out has already been reclaimed and turned into land using caissons: the north corner of the planned island on May 1, 2000; the south corner on May 10; and part of the seawalls on the east side on October 22.The appearance of the portion above the sea surface, however, represents the first instance of land reclamation that has been completed with gently sloping rubble mound seawalls.
To commemorate this occasion, a ceremony was held on the day of the first appearance to pray for smooth progression and safety of the construction work, as well as to mark the first visual evidence of land reclamation. This ceremony was attended by the representatives of organizations engaged in the construction work such as Kansai International Airport Land Development Co., Ltd., Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd., Construction Cooperation Association, and individual construction company groups. At this land reclamation ceremony, commemorative rubbles upon which citizens wrote various messages in an event held last year titled 'Message Writing on Rubbles', were placed on the part of the seawalls that has appeared above the sea surface.
