In September 1994, Kansai International Airport
(KIX) was opened as an operation around the clock about 5 km off the
coast of Senshu, in an effort to radically solve problems plaguing
the surrounding area that deals directly with air traffic.
These problems
included noise pollution due to heavy air traffic that was a direct
result of increasing demand for air transport previously unmet by
other airports in the area.
The construction project for the second airport
island which includes the second runway has
been progressing since 1999, and the second
runaway has started operation in August 2007.
Our environmental conservation measures in the operation of the airport
include the building of facilities on the island to treat sewage and
waste generated from the airport, the employment of a co-generation
system to use energy more efficiently, the reuse of treated wastewater
to decrease negative environmental impact, and the use of gently sloping
rubble mound type seawall to propagate the development of colonies
of various types of marine life.
This experience is used during the construction
project for the second phase airport island, and efforts are being
made for environment conservation and environment creation.
